2025 Te Manawahoukura Residency
We are happy to confirm that our Te Manawahoukura Residencies open up for applications in May. There are two places confirmed for this great Rangahau opportunity. The details of each residency are as follows:
Applicants will be supported for 3 months to complete an existing piece of work such as:
a PhD
a substantial piece of writing or set of writings (eg. a number of journal articles or book chapters)
a podcast series
a toi artefact/exhibition
a film documentary or other project as proposed that constitutes 3-months’ work.
We aim to commence the residency by 1st July 2026 and run for 3 months consecutively, however, the start date will be dependent on ensuring cover is in place for the successful applicants’ substantive roles first.
Kaimahi must hold permanent roles of at least 0.5FTE within Te Wānanga o Aotearoa or,
be on a fixed term contract of 3 years or more.

Dr Morehu McDonald Residency
In 2025, Tutakangahau Williams (Kaiarataki Ako | Waiariki) of Tūhoe, Ngāti Whakaue, Ngāti Hauiti descent, was awarded the newly established Dr Morehu McDonald Residency, in honour of Morehu's steadfast commitment as Māori, to advancing kaupapa Māori, Rangahau, and te ao Māori for the betterment of te iwi Māori. Tu’s Rangahau contributed to advancing kaupapa Māori scholarship with a particular focus on Tāne Māori. We are happy to announce that Tu has now been accepted on to the Phd programme at University of Auckland.
Te Manawahoukura Residency
Dr Kathryn Oxborrow Vambe (Senior Librarian | Porirua) was the recipient of our Te Manawahoukura Residency which focused on how mainstream researchers can be good allies within their research, with a focus on writing for publication.
